You don’t need to clean your ears.
Actually, your ears are probably doing just fine without your help. Yet, we spend billions on swabs, drops, and gadgets, treating the ear canal like a dirty room that needs regular janitorial work. It doesn’t work that way.
Earwax isn’t trash. It’s a shield.

Without it, your outer ear would be wide open to infections, water damage, and dryness. The substance lubricates the skin. It prevents itching. And if you start digging, you risk stripping that natural barrier away.

Why Q-Tips Make It Worse
Pop culture loves Q-tips. Kevin James has a dance move for it. But using cotton swabs inside the ear canal is a mistake. The packaging says “do not insert.” The experts scream about it. But people ignore the warning anyway.
Here is what actually happens when you use a swab:
- You pack the wax deeper against the eardrum.
- You scratch the delicate skin of the canal.
- You create micro-tears that invite bacteria.
- You trigger a cycle of itching that leads to more swabbing.
Dr. Lustig explains the physics of the failure. The ear canal is narrow. The swab is often too thick or used with too much force. It acts like a plunger. You aren’t removing the wax; you’re cementing it into a blockage.

How To Clean Ears Safely at Home
If you are determined to maintain your ears, focus on the outside only. Let the internal system handle itself.
The best method is simplicity. During your shower, let warm water run over the outer ear. Use a soapy finger or a washcloth to wipe the opening. Clean only what is visible. If the wax doesn’t come out on its own, leave it alone.
For those dealing with hard, impacted wax, over-the-counter drops can help. Debrox and similar products use carbamide peroxide. This breaks down the wax. Hydrogen peroxide works too. It softens the hardened plugs.

When to See a Doctor

Don’t try to force it out with tweezers or hooks. You can puncture the eardrum.
See an ENT. A doctor can use alligator forceps to pull out hard chunks. They can suction out softened wax safely. They can check if the “blocked” feeling is actually something else.
Sudden hearing loss can look like wax buildup. It might be a virus hitting the inner ear. It might be nerve damage. If your hearing drops suddenly, make an appointment immediately. Time matters for recovery.
We treat our ears like dirty pipes. They are more like sensitive, self-regulating ecosystems. Respect the system. Use a washcloth. Let the body do its job. And maybe stop buying Q-tips for one of those uses.
